General information about Santorini
Santorini is an island group consisting of Thera Island, Thirassia, White Island and the two volcanoes Old and New Kameni. It is the most southerly of the Cycladic islands and is 73 sq km in size. Santorini is one of the most famous islands on the world attracting millions of tourists annually who come to enjoy the rich history, fine wine and tasty local food products. Comprised of traditional villages with windy footpaths, whitewashed housed and blue-domed churches, Santorini possesses all the typical charm of the Greek Islands.
However, Santorini is unique due to its rugged beauty which was carved out of violent volcanic eruption in 1625 BC leaving an ominous sea-filled crater and high steep cliffs from which villages eventually nested in the middle ages, using the high vantage point as a look-out for pirates. The result is a mysterious blend of awe-inspiring view from charming white villages full of luxurious hotels, fine dining and excellent shopping. Santorini is also famous for its romantic sunsets and it is no wonder that the island is the world’s most popular honeymoon destination.
On the other side of the volcanic cauldron (Caldera) are the many fine black sand beaches with their traditional seafood restaurants and day activities.
